Amy, EJ, and Stacy wrap up The Spider's Mate trilogy with a big hairy episode. We... go on an adventure through the jungle, ask ourselves if spiders really would taste like crabs, and speculate on where the duo known as Tiffany Roberts might go from here.

We have memes so you should invest the whole hour we goof off to at least get what the heck we're talking about.

Memes and Sam Griffin's BRILLIANT Vrix concept art are at this link here>>> https://talesfromtheorcden.com/2023/07/07/bound-by-tiffany-roberts

EJ

Welcome back readers.

Stacy

Third book, bricks Series by Tiffany Roberts. You like that? That was like my sultry Siri

EJ

voice. I, it could be. Actually that's fun. That's great. I have not listened. I know. I believe there's audio books of these. I would be very, I'm, yeah. I'm curious what they are like at the time of the I haven't, I'm not

Stacy

hurt. I haven't listened to any of them. Oh no. They're not out yet. Or they're maybe the first one's out. Okay. I'm very excited for this because as I recall, they're doing it duet narration. Ooh. I think you're right. Instead of it just being two narrators alternating between the chapters, they're doing it the way SJ Sanders did for aural Chronicles. The trilogy where it's the female narrator has all of the female lines, regardless of whose perspective it is. And the male narrator has all of the male lines, regardless of whose perspective it is. Very cool. We're in per It makes the sex scenes, it makes the sex and fucking hot. Awesome. So

EJ

this would be, I would love to sit next to that booth and listen to this third book bound cuz it is, at this point the stakes are high. And we need to get the fuck outta town. Everyone we knew, like everyone knew that they needed to leave, but now they need to fucking leave

Stacy

now. Yeah. Now we really fucking need have to book it.

EJ

Ed, by the way, can you trust onset now and poor onset? She is, she's fucked up. I know. She's fucked up. She did not. This

Stacy

is the Yes. Worse than

EJ

opposite of what she meant to do.

Stacy

Yes. Onset is the physical embodiment of the road to hell. Being paved with good intentions, Absolut fucking

EJ

lutely, Absolut. Absolutely. Absolutely.

Stacy

Or onset my heart broke for her. But also like

EJ

Absolutely. Absolutely. You need to sit in this. You really do.

Stacy

And it's kinda one of those things, I both for you and you need to sit in this, I feel for you, but not as much as I feel for Ella. It's also one of those things too, where as it's happening, you know how this is gonna play out. Yeah. The only one who thinks this is gonna end on a positive note is onset. And so the entire time you're like, oh God, no. Oh God please, no. And then it, the shit hits the fan and it, and she's just, yeah. And it's sad too when you see somebody who wants to believe the best in somebody isn't able to anymore. Like it's taken away from them because it's not. Because Ella and Katana aren't the only ones who are victimized here. Onset was victimized too. And this is the first time that she's forced to acknowledge the fact that Zhi doesn't give a fuck about her. Zhi doesn't give a fuck about anybody but Zhi. Yeah. And unfortunately, and this is a grim fucking way to have to learn that horrible lesson. And so not only has Onset lost her friend Ella, who she was supposed to be the protector of. Cuz all through the second book, she is carrying Ella, if Ella's not riding on her back, then she is literally carrying Ella Cradled in her arms like a baby. And so it's almost like Zhi murdered her child. In a roundabout way. And honestly of all of them, I honestly feel like, obviously other than Ella, Ella is the one who suffered the most, but I feel that onset is the one that this is gonna have the most emotional repercussion on because not only has her friend and proto child been murdered in front of her, she's the one who brought her to her doom. You and Yeah. She was trying to do the right thing and that does account for something. But at the end of the day, she's still got somebody killed. And she got them killed cruelly. And then on top of it, you have all of the secondary fallout. Kaan is now in Z's hands, Kaan. Now she, what's this done to her relationship with Kaan, her only living sibling or member of her family? And so it's one of those things where she's lost a lot more than just her friend. She's lost a perspective that was important to her. The belief that Zer, she can be Bear queen. Yeah. Her world view her and fucked up her entire world views been destroyed and she has. So not only has she lost someone who in a very short time has become very dear to her, but now she has to re-examine every single one of those deaths that Zhi caused. Their parents, all of their brooded siblings, I believe the two broods before onset and Catton's brood, I think they were all wiped out. So this is potentially like 20 people in her family that Zhi caused the death of. And she has to examine all of those deaths as murders, as well as what happened to to Ella and what could potentially happen to Kaan. And even the other humans, like she has come to regard Ivy as her sister, because Ivy, was willing to embrace that relationship with her from the GetGo. There was no hostility or anything between Ivy and onset. And so it's not just Ella that she's lost in this, she's lost it's like the floor fell out from underneath her, but it also, like all of the surrounding land around her has fallen out from beneath her too. Yeah. This is an exponential explosion in her life where the further it reaches, the more people it touches. Yeah.

EJ

Damn. Tiffany Roberts, you did a good job,

Stacy

right? Yes. Why you gotta do me like that. I have yelled at them before for making me cry. I yelled at them on Facebook and I've yelled at them on Instagram and they'll take it. Bless them. Damn. Oh no. They laughed at me. They absolutely laughed at me as they should have. I would've too. Yes. I'd be like, did you save any of the tears? Can I drink them?

EJ

I love that. I, the, it's like the start of a really weird sci-fi Oregon trail. Like I kept on gaining Oregon trail vibes, especially where it's like the humans need a break. Like, where shall we go? We shall go off to this side. Oh, there's a unique plant. Do I touch it or not? I could just I could just see the little dialogue bars

Stacy

Yeah. Someone

EJ

touched the plant. Now

Stacy

they are eaten. Somebody touched the plant. Beth has died of dysentery. Remember

Amy

though, Kaan has been captured. He needs to get

Stacy

freed. Yes. And he's had the shit beat outta him in the process.

EJ

Did. Before we can go on our road trip, we need to save our boy

Stacy

Kaan. Yes. It's also problematic because in the course of onset flight, basically Carala has, I think, been stripped of her position as head guard. Oh. She's still a member of the fangs, but she's definitely I. Z She's pissed at her. And on all of onsets jewelry is taken from her because the fang are very heavily decorated. Yeah. Like they have those girls jewelry. They have, yeah. They have some spider silk draping in different colors. And and her ring to Katara or for Carla has been taken from her mandible. So all of her jewelry has been taken from her. And of, and of all of it, I think the mandible, I think was the cruelest one. But there's another one, I can't remember her name, who is very she likes hurting things too. Much like Zahi, who's since joined the things. I think maybe to take Onsets place or no. She's the cruel one that wanted to, that went after the the Weaver. I think it was in the beginning of the first book when they're in lines to make their offerings. Oh, yeah. And she tries to come down on him because he has a knife. Cause he's a weaver or a leather worker or something like that. I can't remember what it was. Yeah. It was something like really innocuous. It was a tool. Yeah. It was a tool that was necessary for his trade. And he hadn't even thought about bringing it in. And she was set to like, fuck him up. But on set is the one who was just like, no sister. Like my mother was a weaver. Like this is a tool that weavers use. And but sh there is a member of the fangs who is very eager to hurt people just for the fucking thrill of it. And there are people like that. That is true. And she has been let off of her tether, basically. To go out and to hunt the rest of Ivy. Yeah. Onset has to

Amy

leave them.

Stacy

Onset is either way. Like

EJ

upper place. Yeah. And people are like, okay, let even zer, he's go get me those fucking humans. Now for little Katon. That's man, I actually forget like how he, so he escapes.

Stacy

He escapes because.

Amy

At onset the test goes

Stacy

to him Yes. And gets him free.

Amy

And yes.

Stacy

The art speaker helped. Yes. The art speaker helped too. Because she was very

Amy

disturbed. White or unsettled by what she, because

Stacy

she witnessed Ella's death as well. Yes.

EJ

She does. No, I that now I remember that cuz I remember reading that and I'm like, the speaker is talking about murder like a Midwesterner would where if anyone has seen Fargo

Stacy

how fucking

EJ

understated everyone is.

Stacy

Go bearers.

EJ

Yeah. Like how could you commit murder on such a nice day like today? I do admit this is where I realize, ah, this is why On Set has the mate that she does, they are perfectly suited

Stacy

for each other. Yes. Car Carla does not have rose colored glasses. No at all. Carla knows exactly what Zhi is. Yes.

EJ

She is a wonderful foil to her mate. They are best together.

Stacy

And what Katan is locked up in is fucked up. Like basically he's strung up. All of his limbs are basically like stretched out and he's hung by his neck. So he is hanging by his limbs. But if he manages, if he tries to get loose too hard, he'll end up choking himself basically. Like he could potentially get loose wrong and end up accidentally snapping his neck because like they, they say through it, like Catton's neck muscles are like crazy strong. Like you'd have to be to support the weight of his head and also the mandible muscles. But Keans got away half a ton or close down to it, like when all is said and done, like with the legs and the weight of the body armor, like the natural body armor and everything like that. He's probably gotta be around the eight, 900 pound range. And so if he managed to pull his legs loose, his neck would snap. There's no question of it. Like his, no matter how strong his neck muscles are, they're not gonna be able to support the weight of his torso. Again.

EJ

I would love to sit down, like how did that brainstorming session go? What did we Google? I would love

Stacy

to hear that. Sam Griffin had a lot to do with it too. Oh. Because she's the one who designed the bricks because on their. Facebook page back when the books were first coming out. They shared some of the concept art that they were coming up with because they showed some of the different designs that were like in the running for Kaan and Onset Bull. Cool. And I think even Zhi and then showed like the ones that were picked. And that's actually some of the rejected designs are what went on to become like Reka and Ercot and te. But what's really fucking funny is have you guys seen the Jumping Spider comic that she did? No, I think so. I've got it. And I'll, it's on their Facebook page, so it's not like Patreon protected or anything like that. I'll share it with you guys off mic. But it's really fucking funny because as all of this was going on, somebody in the Facebook group, I don't remember who was like, are we gonna have a jumping spider species? Like a peacock jumping spider? And or no, I think somebody else was like, what about are they gonna dance? I think that's what it was. Cause peacock spiders dance to ate and they'll jumping spiders rather, and they'll put like a water droplet on their head and do a little boogie and everything like that. And it's, if you can ever find footage of a dancing spider or a jumping spider dancing, fucking find it because it's the cutest goddamn thing you've ever seen. But they mentioned jumping spiders as an example of spiders who danced to attract a mate. And Sam Griffin did a comic strip of what a peacock or a peacock jumping spider bricks would look like. And it goddamn damn funny because you just see this close up on this spidery face, and he's prepare yourself future human mate. And then it like pulls back and it's like him doing jazz hands and his legs are kicking out and he's do you not accept all of me? And there's just a human as this little cheesy, like peacock spider has a rose in his mouth and hard eyes and is like dancing in the foreground. And that came out at the same time that all of the like development art came out for. So I don't know how much of this was Tiffany Roberts, and I don't know how much of this was Sam Griffith basically. So this could be that it was like there, there's a lot of commingled it was a couple of people basically inputting ideas. I think not just. Tiffany and Robert are sitting down and plotting this out, basically, is what I'm saying. Oh, okay. Very cool. I gotta see if I can find that and send it to find you find that I need to put that, I didn't know that. I know I have it.

EJ

But it's, and it's also it's a good scene too of kaan escaping because then you're starting to see oh, there's actually some serious cracks going on in

Stacy

the scene. Yeah, for sure. And foreshadows

EJ

what are the different ways that maybe the queen gets her downfall? Because for me, as a reader, I'm over here. That bitch has to go. I already wanted that bitch to go, but now she needs to go yesterday.

Stacy

Yes. I don't just want the bitch dead. I want the bitch to suffer.

EJ

And that would've been like the best no. Now we can't just have a normal murder. Oh no. We have to have some supper.

Stacy

Yes. Yes. Now you're gonna, my favorite thing is if I, if the gloves are coming off, is it, I may not win, but you're gonna fucking remember me every time the it, it rains in the winter basically is how I feel about Zer. You may kill me, but you're gonna fucking remember me before you do.

EJ

And so I was thinking like, all right, so we know they're going to be hunted, but at the very least we know that there is some trouble at home. So that's good. And it, yes, that's very good. And it's nice to offset that then with the road trip is frankly fun deadly Plants notwithstanding

Amy

however, before the road trip, there has to be another rescue mission going on. Cause gotta save

Stacy

onset. Oh my. Yes. First we gotta save katon, then we gotta save onset. So Katon manages to mostly get loose and then Koala comes. Yeah. And that's where you see some of her jewelry I think has been taken too. She is very obviously no longer in the Queen's favor, and I think she's still the Prime

Amy

Claw or fang, whatever. It's maybe she's still

Stacy

the prime, maybe she's still the Prime Fang, but she's in trouble basically. Yeah. She's not and she's scared shitless free cause Yeah. And she's scared shitless because not only is Kaan now in danger, but basically onset is in danger too. Zer doesn't keep things that she doesn't have a use for, basically. No. And she doesn't have a use for onset anymore. And so basically poor Carala is like shit and bricks over here because can't, what am I, who do I help first? Who do I help first? In fact, I think it's onset. Who tells her Get Katana out of the city, isn't it? Don't worry about me, I can take care of me. Yeah. And so Zer has basically got him locked up and the idea is he's gonna stay in there until he agrees to meet her. Because it has to, she has to break Kato's pride. It has to be that she's broken him and he comes crawling to her before she's gonna be satisfied. And then she probably fuck him a couple of times and kill him. And so he's basic. So she's come to visit him once, so she basically tells him, or he basically tells her to go down in a fire and then he's gotten, I think, A couple of his legs out or has he gotten out completely when it's Carla? I can't remember if he's half out or if he's all the way out when Carla comes. Just bring him. I think he's, I know he's, I think he's out. Cause I thought it was something like he backed himself into a corner and he attacked her. Yeah. I think he's, and she's just yeah. And she's stop it. You fucking idiot. I'm here to help you. Yeah. Pretty much. And realizes it's not the queen, it's carolla. And so she sneaks him to the head speaker. And the head speaker basically, essentially reassures him that Ella is being given the burial rights that any Ricks would be given and she's going to be placed in the crypt, essentially. And she's been like, her parts have been reunited. And she's being giving like a choice spot in the crypt too. Like she's not just gonna be hidden in a closet somewhere. But the head speaker is basically there's a way out behind the large statue of the former queen. And so basically Katon is able to get like it's a way out that he didn't know was there. And so she's able to get him out. And so basically this is where you get the what's the word I'm looking for? The threads have been extruded. That will spin to be a web that could eventually lead to Z's downfall. Because now you find out that the high speaker was horrified about what happened to Ella the fangs are fractured. Half of the things are horrified. The other half are thirsting for blood and there's already unrest in the city because. People are starving. That's that's what happened in France. There's a reason why the guillotine was invented.

EJ

That is true. There is nothing like starving people to make them be like, fuck this

Stacy

shit. Yeah. I got nothing left. I literally have nothing left to lose.

EJ

And reasonable.

Stacy

Absolutely reasonable. Yeah.

EJ

And of course all of the the stakes again fucking high. And so I keep on being like, I, I keep on I think revisiting like happy road trip because

Stacy

I'm like, it's cause I'm trying to tune out all of the horror that came before it. Yeah. for me, the scariest thing, other than Ivy being in Z's hands in these books, the scariest moments for me are when Kaan is in Z's hands. Yeah. And so every time it happens, I'm like rocking on the bed like. And so until he gets out of there, I'm in like a like tense mode. Like high, yeah. Tense mode, basically. Like I'm in like high anxiety until he manage to get outta there. So I totally feel you on wanting to, just of this as in happy road trip terms basically, despite fact that, a happy road trip, but there's a lot of unhappy on that road trip too. The other thing that's it's the upsetting part of this is that through the, second book, like they are not a slog. Like it's if you can move, we're moving, we are moving until the humans absolutely cannot keep up, then we're carrying the human and we're going on until we can't keep up anymore.

EJ

And the Happy Road trip is only happy road trip compared to being stuck at the Stone City.

Stacy

Yes, for sure. Yes. And then onset takes Ella and you realize, they realize they're only like a day and a half of travel away from the Stone City. So all of that progress that you feel like you're making, suddenly you realize they have not made much progress at all because the humans can't move as fast as the bricks. And at the same time, the bricks are also trying to teach the humans how to survive in the tangle. And so you're thinking through the second book okay, they're putting more distance between them. They're putting more distance between them. And then you realize at the start of the third book, not really, it's not enough to, for them to take a breather. Like we have plenty of humans who live in environments like that, but, they can't drop everything and run for fucking four days like the bricks can, right? Oh, and don't forget

EJ

the freaky eel fish things.

Stacy

Yeah. Whatever the hell those fish and the fucking, the predators that, that pinned them in their nest in the second Or viss. Yeah. Viss. Yeah. Which I think is what caused Katan to fall into the pit in the first place. Isn't it? Was. It was, yeah. And then

Amy

The other thing, the nest that they were caught in was a

Stacy

yas nest. Oh, that's what it was. Okay. And even the tens are dangerous and they're, this is the giant ones. Yeah. Yeah. Cause they're huge. Like even the bricks are like, no, we don't wanna fuck with that. No. And it's just a case of you'll just, you'll be fucking trampled. It's like going up against a moose. Like a moose isn't gonna eat you, but if a moose decides to stomp you to death, the moose is probably gonna win. Moose will definitely win. Oh,

EJ

absolutely. The

Stacy

moose will win. And so it's that same kind of thing where even if it's not a direct predator, it's still dangerous, right? Yeah, exactly. And so and that's not taking into consideration. They talk about in the first book when they're trying to figure out like what Ivy can eat when Katana almost he poisons her an accident. And if it hadn't been for the adaptive shots that she'd been given before the colonist slept, she probably would've died of poisoning, right? Yeah. But she instead she was just sick of the dog for six days and so they gotta watch out for shit like that too. It's insane. No sick ivy though.

Amy

She got sick in

EJ

this book too. Oh yes.

Stacy

Was that the flower? No.

EJ

No. When did Ivy get sick? That was one of those things where I was like, when's she going to get knocked up? Because we keep on talking about ah, there are different

Stacy

species. I'm sorry, I shoulda have said quote Stacy, she got nauseous. Let's put it like that.

EJ

Oh, as someone who's had morning sickness is what they call it. Anyway, I'm over here yeah, it sucks

Stacy

ass. I didn't, I've never been pregnant, but I, they put, I switched from Nuva ring to oral medication cuz it was cheaper and nobody fucking told me how goddamn nauseous it makes you. Oh

EJ

yeah. Essentially that's what's happening. Your hormones are going fucking nuts. That's

Stacy

really what morning sickness. I'm pregnant. Yeah. Yeah. And so it wasn't until somebody else, like I talked to my doctor, I don't even know how many times, and it wasn't until someone else who'd gone through it finally said, take it when you have dinner that I was able to quell the nausea. And it's yeah, it would've been nice if you motherfuckers had told me that to begin with. It's amazing. Doctors skip out on telling us. Indeed. Uhhuh indeed. Fuckers. Oh. But yeah, my doctor I'm recently switching my doctors and my previous doctor's office can go fuck themselves for all I care. This

Amy

is why Diego a much better doctor for them right now. Concur.

Stacy

Concur. He sounds

EJ

like a sweet doctor. I would've loved him as like my nurse practitioner or something.

Stacy

And at the end too, he's the one who helps Ivy with her delivery. Yeah. Give a shit. Like he gives a shit basically. And he says, because I asked him earlier like, why did you become a nurse? And he talks about how his mom was a nurse and she really gave 110% to be a nurse. And so he's somebody who's coming about it from the proper. He's somebody who went into medicine for the right reasons, basically. Yeah.

EJ

He's an awesome diviv. Yes. Yay Diego. And I also appreciate with the road trip, things get especially like tense cuz they're going into thorns, skull territory, and, the PTs d it, it took occurs. It

Stacy

happens. Yes. Yes. And the thing too is they're basically saying trigger and it's fuck. Yeah. Basically all we can do is be real fucking quiet. We cannot fuck this up, basically. Because, essentially cuz because there's some talk where they're like they might decide with us and then the enemy of my enemy is my friend kind of thing. And then the others are like, yeah. Or they might all fucking kill us on site and take our humans and kill them. Who knows? Let's fight. So I totally shall we, one, I totally agree with everybody who is I, it's not worth the risk. It's not worth the risk. I would much rather sneak in than try and make contact and find out that no they're totally okay with killing us. And I agree with them. I would've been in the same way. I get

EJ

it. I get it. And it ended up being like a okay risk. And also like you get to I find it really interesting and pro and I felt the bittersweetness of the experience for like Kaan and company, like these are their former enemies. And as they're getting to know them, they find that they're actually a pretty decent people who are Yeah. Like major victims. Hang on of the

Stacy

war. Probably. Let's not jump ahead just yet. How the introduction to the thorns calls is fucking hilarious.

EJ

That's fair. That's fair.

Stacy

Yeah. Ivy, like Katon, rejoins the group, all he'll really say, is Ella's dead? And then, He didn't say that. All he said was, I am sorry. My nalia Oh, to Ivy.

EJ

Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Ivy has to put some shit

Stacy

together. That was rough. They know Ella's not coming back basically. Yeah. And then I think like a couple of days out on set, rejoins them and it's the kind of thing where nobody rejects her, but like Kaan is not talking to her. He, and it's not even that he is necessarily being like cold towards her. It's just one of those things where he can't trust her. He loves her, but he can't trust her. And that's basically, that's a terrible fucking state to be in. I trusted you. I love you, and you got our friend killed, basically. And so it's the kind of thing where I like it because it's not, magically, onset is forgiven and everything's ao okay. There's recovery time that has to happen basically. And onset is basically attempting to sort of Mia culpa anything that she can she'll take the rear guard she'll, she'll take the dangerous watch. She'll go first or she'll stabilize something so everybody can cross it before she tries to cross it kind of thing. Like onset has fucked up and Onset is realizing the depth to which that she's fucked up and she's realized how long she's fucked up. And it, that's a hard thing to realize that you've been fucking up for most of your adult life, when you think you're doing the right thing. Yeah. And so onset rejoins them, is it the third book that they act? They get poisoned by the flower? Yeah. ORs that the second book, so I think so. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. I think it's the third book. Cause because they're running and so they're hustle. And Is Amaya, I think is a botanist, isn't she? Or she has botany, inclinations. I think she's the one that she wanted to be a botanist, but there was no money. She gave a florist, if I'm remembering right. Yeah. It was something like that. And she notices the flowers. She's an amateur botanist, if nothing else. Yes. And so she notices these truly beautiful flowers, which I can't remember what they're called, but they're like a very rare thing. And I think you could eat them. Isn't that what it is? Like you're, you eat them and they're very sweet. And Rakas is look, we can take five minutes so they can look at the damn flowers. There's no point in any of this if there's no joy to be found anywhere basically. Which is, a healthy point. And so Amaya and Ivy go over to look and they're noticing like, what are these weird things that are sticking up over here? Yeah. And. Suddenly the bricks realize it's, it is these flowers, but there's a predatory plant that will grow underneath the peeling flowers and is essentially a Starla classic Oregon trail moment. Of course. I don't remember the Starla pit on the Oregon Trail, but Sure. And I played that this is where it needs

EJ

to be a video

Stacy

game, I'm just saying. And so just as so basically what this plant does is it lures you close with this appealing plant and then it's nested under, and then it stings you and then pulls you in and eats you at its leisure and charming. Yeah. And so resh and kaan, like the penny dropped like a beat too late, and so they're able to grab them, but both of them are stung in the process of ivy and Amaya, neither, I don't think either of them got a full dose, but they definitely got a bit. And so Ivy got less than Amaya did because Amaya goes down pretty quick. Like she's out within moments. And then Ivy, it's like a slow, like she and Katana have a moment of, oh my God, that was so scary. And then suddenly she's I can't feel my legs. And they realize it got her a more glancing blow. But she goes down too, and there's nothing that they can do where they don't know how this is gonna impact the humans long term. So they've gotta find a safe place to keep them until they recover. And so this is a one-two punch because this happens not too long after the loss of Ella. So the humans are already reeling and now two more of their party have been dropped. So I think the humans were feeling like scared, but fairly confident. Cause you know, we've got these giant fucking spider people to protect us. And now they've learned the hard way that some giant spider people will kill you and most of the rest of this planet will kill you too. And sometimes the giant spider people aren't enough to keep you safe. So that's a real fucking scary thing to have to confront your own mortality while grieving the loss of a friend and being worried about two others. So the humans who aren't impacted by this are rather understandably scared and depressed, basically. And so this is where you have the scene where Amaya is asleep in the little cave that they slid her into. And Rakas has basically carried her as far as he can. And then she was laying down and her foot was out and he had reached. To cover her foot back up but had fallen asleep before he could complete the movement. And he guy, yeah. And so he's unconscious with like his legs and his thorax like out in the rain while the rest of him is inside, he's slid himself halfway into the cave and is asleep next to Amaya. And so the whole thing is just like everybody is spooked now at this point. What's gone from being like a boy scout camping trip on steroid to suddenly, it was always a flight for their life, but now it's really been driven home that this is a flight for your life basically. It just got to the chapter, Stacy, I can

Amy

tell you what the hell those

Stacy

flowers are called. What are they called? Singer's hearts. Yeah. Cuz it's supposed to be something that like, you can the root singer talk to the, that you can talk to the eight with it or something like that. I can't, something like that. Yeah. I don't remember the particulars anymore. But anyway, go ahead.

EJ

But anyway, jumping forward to like, when they're like meeting up with the thorn skulls.

Stacy

Yeah. So we get to the point where, so they make it through the swamp because the swamp is the line of demarcation. And this is the swamp where Ercot lost his arm. This is the swamp where onset and Catton's brother their brewed brother bled out and died and they had to leave him in the swamp. And I think there was a someone else that they were close to who died, maybe they lost two brothers there. I can't remember anymore. But they lost a lot of people. They lost a lot, basically. And this is why Gervasi didn't in the initial war march in and just destroy the thorn skulls because the swamp is a natural barrier. And the swamp itself took so many of the bricks that it wasn't worth the effort that it would take to get across, to go on and further crush the thorn skulls basically. So the thorn skulls lost a big chunk of their territory. They were pushed back across the swamp, but Z's reach couldn't quite reach logistically across the swamp to further smush them out, essentially. And so the thorn skulls have been licking their wounds in private because the war was wet like three years before. Has it been longer than that? Yeah. It's been a couple of years. Yeah. It's been a couple of years, but not enough for an entire generation to replace the generation that was lost. And that's the whole bit with er hot with the fucking eel where he's hand Yes. Hello. Hello friends. Yes. Oh my God. He's flopping this fish around and cracks everybody out. I love that. And they find a place to camp where they're like up in the trees and they're these huge trees that are like, bigger than mature redwoods. And some of them like have been felled or have been split. And so they create these like plateaus on these huge tree trunks is how I imagined it. And so they're camping on one and Ivy is finally recovered and Katan is like, I need to put my dick inside of you please. Because it's been a while and I have anxiety. And Ivy is I too would like your dick placed inside of me please. Because it has been too long. And that skank as queen Rubb your pheromones all over you. And I would like to rub mine on you Please. And with this, gentile agreement made between Ivy and Katan, your reactions may vary. So they go out and they have, they, they have an aggressive bout of snooze oo, on one of the more private tree trunks. And then almost immediately after Kaan realizes they're being watched. And not only are they being watched, they're being watched by two different factions. Yep. So the claws have reached them Zervos claws and a couple of the fangs too, because they kill them and then they discover. So they've killed all of the scouts. I think there's six scouts or something like that. And they kill all of them, but two who make it into the tall grass and then abruptly quit moving. So there's something in the tall grass. And that's when they meet the defacto general of the thorn skulls. And that whole fucking, he's so goddamn weird and I love it. He has the weirdest speech patterns. And then I almost imagine it like it's Yorkshire or something. Like it's technically we're speaking the same language, but there's a heavy dialect in place. And somebody from California trying to talk to somebody from New Bedford or something like that. And and you find out that the entire time he totally watched Katan and I Fuck. And he's basically he's essentially, he's pretty cool with it. I think he's impressed, honestly. I didn't think something that small could take it. And it did. Congratulations to you both. He's basically y'all are freaks and I enjoyed watching and so instead of their attempt to sneak into Thorn skull territory, because you find out that in the course of the war, they learned from a lot from Kaan, honestly, Cause Kaan was a silent assassin, basically. Which kind of makes sense with the type of spider. Like I get the impression that the bricks are modeled loosely after like black widows. Yeah. And so they're, that long quiet spindly limbed kind of spider. Whereas the the thorn skulls are more like, again, they're, there's a type of spider that they're based on, but I can't remember what they're called. But they're much more their s are more almost like a crab. There's like protrusions and like they're built they're like little tanks basically. And so prior to this, the Thornton skulls like stealth wasn't really there bad until they realized that they could wrap themselves in mud. Cuz don't they have like the bricks can see really well in the dark. They're, but if the wraps

EJ

in also like the thorn skulls are

Stacy

gorgeous and colorful. Yes. But you don't but you don't find that out until they go back and bathe. Cause they're covered in the mud. That helps them hide better in the shadows because they're not naturally black. Like kaons Spier, like kaons, I guess species would be right. Species of bricks yes. Are so they have to cover themselves up and it helps'em hide in the shadows better. And so they meet, what's the head thorns, school's name? Amy? Trying to get to him. What is his name? He's one of now. Garak, what's his name? I, Iraq. No, Garak. Gar. Okay. And so they find, so gar, I should say Garak finds him, reveals that he totally watched them bang and would maybe be welcome, open to watching them bang again if they were down for it. But he essentially says like they basically make an agreement where neither of them are gonna try and kill anybody on either side. So we're not friends, but we've got a deun in a Deon in place. And soak a agrees to take them back to their city basically. Which is a big this is a big effort of trust that he's extending. And to meet with their queen basically. And she is like night and day, completely different than Zahi they take him to the city of College Rock to meet with the queen who doesn't even call herself the queen. She calls herself more like the Guardian or something like that. Which of course, and when they meet her perfectly

EJ

done I'm so glad that they did that story wise. Totally. Because it, I think what's u nifty about seeing the thorn skulls is that you can see ah, there's a different way

Stacy

of doing things. Yes. There's a way to do it and people can thrive. Malak for me, Malki. So they meet Nachi. Sorry. Okay. No. It's all good she is this like beautifully maternal, very loving individual. And you find out that she's gar ACT's mates too, on top of it. She's white. I think

Amy

she's all white. I think

Stacy

I know's white. She is garrick's all, she's all whiteness. She has brown hair. She has chestnut hair. Ok. Cause I was like fucking, finally the brunette's got some representation that's not just black. Woohoo. And cuz I feel like there's a d like so many people are just like, brunette, it's like black or brown. It's no, you have black hair or you have brown hair. It's not interchangeable. It's totally cool. I will never have black hair unless I apply dye to it. A person who naturally has black hair will not have brown hair unless they apply dye to it. Yeah. They're two separate things. No, she has hair color, I think close to mine cuz it's described as chestnut. And she's just had a brood of eggs. And there's actually a really sweet bonding scene where, cuz she's also a healer where she inspects ivy and realizes she's pregnant and Ivy gives her permission to touch her abdomen because she's never seen they, they don't, they don't carry internally like humans do. And so she's she has like a professional like midwife's curiosity about how this pregnancy is moving. And so she agrees and lets her in like investigator knowing full well that she could rip ivy to pieces with very little effort on her part. And in return as a acknowledgement of the vulnerability that Ivy showed her. She allows Ivy to touch her eggs. And so it's this very sweet kind of moment of, each of them are approaching it differently, but both of them are about to be mothers and both of them are taking this seriously. And I like how the bricks eggs were described too. Like they're like little jewel. Yes. And the nest of spider silk that she made. And so basically, they tell their whole story and she agrees along with garak that they have to protect this little tiny tribe. And everybody hates zhi anyway. And Right. I think it also helps a lot too, that the Thorn schools very, and I might say very graciously, except the fact that they're not the only ones who suffered under DCI's eye, basically. Wow. Yeah. That the people like, like the thorn skulls can get away from her and go back to their own kingdom. What do the people of TA Carl do? Seriously. The city is safety, but what happens when your safety isn't safe anymore and you're starving. So and so it's this thing where they have it's like pieces made between their people except for Zov and those who support her basically.

EJ

Because then we have to have the lines drawn and we gotta set ourselves up for big battle

Stacy

showdown. Fuck yes. So what I like about this is, again, this takes into consideration human ingenuity. And so a big part of the reason why they do eventually triumph over zhi is because of human ideas. Because they don't have. They don't have the headcount to basically be a threat to zhi, like in battle. And so they're gonna have to be Trixie about it basically. Yes. And it's the humans who really come up with the Trixie, that ultimately, along with her own hubris stops to zhi once

EJ

and for all.

Stacy

They go in and for a hot second they're doing okay, but then Zhi just fucking knocks the shit outta Kaon. She breaks a couple of his legs, and that's basically when she tells him she's gonna drag him back to the stone city, and she's gonna basically rip his legs off and use him as a fuck toy whenever she wants to have children, basically. Yeah. And he's still, I love it. He's still like, why don't you go fuck yourself while you're at it? And so an onsets been taken out because she's trying to deal, I think, with the claws and most of the claws by this point in time, they've repopulated with some truly like gross additions to the, either they don't know what the fuck they're doing, or they're blood hungry. Basically they're little zervos. And so it's not looking good at this point in time. So shit is pretty grim. And they're trying their hardest to not get any more thorn skulls killed because enough thorn skulls have been killed by Zhi. And Ivy feels like she doesn't have anything else that she can do. And so she challenges zhi for the throne because the rule is that if a challenge is given, the challenge must be met and it must be met fairly. And if the challenge is not met fairly, then the previous queen is now an illegitimate queen and should be deposed, basically. Yes. And so now they're split because half of the fangs are like, fuck you gross little worm creature. You're not a real person. And then the other half, the honorable half, koala are basically saying a challenge was given. A challenge must be answered. And so now they've neatly boxed zhi in because Zhi brought lots of soldiers so that they could all witness her mites on the battlefield. And so she's brought lots of people to bear witness to Her greatness. But now if she refuses this challenge, she's going to, she is going to endanger her own claim to rulership, basically. And if that happens, it's gonna be challenge after challenge and eventually somebody's gonna get a lucky shot in and she's gonna fall. Exactly. So she is and

EJ

you, and it's a little human worm thing, like

Stacy

I'm gonna squish it in five seconds and I'll get to do it in front of Katon. And the look on his face will be delicious. And then I'll fuck him on her course. Like it's basically what this is going down pretty much. And so she accepts and basically like all of her soldiers have to stand down. So now the fighting is paused. We have, queen on queen Showdown, basically. And so Zhi smacks the shit out of Ivy more than once, basically. I think she breaks her leg, doesn't she? I know it's broken, but maybe arm, Ivy does get pretty, and I think she does, she STAs in a couple of ribs, like she's not doing good. And the whole time Ivy is desperately. Desperately trying to protect her stomach because she's trying to protect the baby. And so all of this is happening and the thorn skulls are looking on and catton's people are looking on, and she jockies her into position and she falls into a fucking pit trap. she falls into the pit traps. She's impaled on the spikes, but she's already like ripping herself off of the spikes and still, all of the evil threats that she's yelling at Ivy. And Ivy walks over to the edge and she pulls out the flare gun and she shoots the flare down into the pit. And at first she's you pitiful worm, you missed. And Ivy's no, I didn't. And the entire fucking thing goes up in flames. This

EJ

is why you don't play around with flare guns kids.

Stacy

But it's a great scene because it's not a quick scene, but it's also not, it doesn't feel like it's like porno graphically stretched out either. Yeah. And there's a great bit where there's this continuous whine that's coming from it, and the thorn skull queen puts her on her hand on Ivy's shoulder and she says, be brave. This is the sound of evil burning itself out. And zer, this is a pretty badass line, I gotta say. Fuck. Yeah. Anderi had a lot of evil. So it's gonna take a minute, basically, and this is where I thought of crab legs, because, I've watched a lot of those, like extreme food shows, like I love Andrew Zimmer's extreme Cooking. And it's people eating bugs, and sometimes you watch it and you be like, that's fucking gross. I'm not eating war. Hard butt hole. But then other times you watch it and you're like, that's fucking gross. But it might be delicious. And every time he's eaten spiders, he says that they taste like crab. I love crab. I do too. Som just saying get over it. I'm just saying, I'm not saying I'm gonna sit down to a big meal of bricks because my personal opinion is let's not eat something. But sentient. Sentient. But you have to admit, it would've been a fuck of a flex if I had fished a leg out, cracked it open and just scared at the fang while I'm mom. Moming on what was fucking left. D And then she's just needs lemon and some butter and throws the carus back into the fire. Yeah. But basically because now because Ivy has she's won the challenge. So now Ivy is the queen of the brick. Yeah. And of course I was like, where are we going with this one now? Okay. Cause and the thing too is it's like the Thorn skull setup sounds so much nicer than where Keans people were living. Like I do. It sounds like they're more on the planes. Like they're not, it's not as it sounds where they're, yeah. Like it sounds more there's trees, but there's grasses, like there's grasslands cuz they're, they do a lot more agriculture too. They have really nice stable leadership. Stable leadership. Their housing sounds really cool. They have a truly phenomenal sounding bad system. Wherever there are baths,

EJ

if I have learned anything from like sci-fi romance and paranormal romance and fantasy romance, like all that, wherever there are Beths, you're in the place. You are in the place you need to be.

Stacy

Yeah. This is, we shall settle here. Yes. We have reached the end of the Oregon Trail. No one else must die of dis and anyway, so Ivy is the winner. Ivy Bec is declared queen and Ivy is like, of all the things in my life that I don't wanna do, being the queen is one of them. And legit. Truth. And so she basically declares that in her stead on set will be ruler and they, everybody has to go along with it because the queen decree it basically. so Ivy declares onset as to be the queen. And at this point in time, onset openly declares that Carala is her mate. But the great thing is now there's peace between their people. And so two fractured people can come together and commingle and to together these broken parts are going to be built back into something beautiful basically. Yeah. And so then we got to the epilogue. Did you guys wanna say anything else about the fight?

EJ

Just that one. It was epic. Two very satisfying.

Stacy

Three, they had it common.

EJ

And especially I think you, you touched on a good point there, Stacy. Like this opens up a brand new world. A new world that we can't explore. And I, yes. I think back to when Tiffany was explaining on Instagram and Facebook and everywhere else that, they were taking, they were needing to take a break and, get back to life. One of the things she mentioned that made the Weaver heart to revisit is that there is a whole world, and I'm over here especially revisiting the end of this book, I'm like, yeah, honey, there's a whole world. You, you can't just jump back into this.

Stacy

And there's a lot of possibilities now where there's a lot of possibilities. But there's also like Stephen King Stephen King love me, like I'm not a die hard. I will read anything Stephen King reads, but I think that when Stephen King does it well, he does it very well. And one of his books that I really surprised myself by enjoying, in fact, I would say it's probably my favorite Stephen King novel, is Dr. Sleep. And that's the sequel to The Shining that he wrote in 2016 or something like that. And so when I first heard that he was doing a sequel to The Shining, I was like Steve's been drinking again. And then I read it and it was, it's fucking beautiful. It is a beautiful fucking book. I genuinely think you can see if you read The Shining, which is unquestionably a masterpiece of horror. And then you read Doctor Sleep immediately afterwards, you can see where he has really refined his craft over the years. He's not as mean as he used to be. And I think that reflects positively in the book. The movie was trash, but that's fine. We don't have to talk about that. Yeah. He talked in the afterward on Dr. Sleep about how, he hasn't visited the world of the overlook in fucking 40 years. And so he actually had to have a couple of assistants go through and reread the book so that they could help him keep on track with the details of the book and the world building. Because you think about it like, like the world of the overlook is nowhere near as, I don't get me wrong, the world of the overlook is very complicated, but it's nowhere near as complicated as creating an entire goddamn species and an entire goddamn world. And, in different sex of the species and interactions and wars and stuff like that, it's not going on. And so there's, and you're all the first shit that you start to lose is the fine details. That's just the way that it goes. So for them to work on the re the weaver, I'm sure they had to themselves reread the entire trilogy. Absolutely. And definitely, I know that the trilogy was rough on them to write just because it was so involved and, in big chunks of the book, a, are not happy to reread. And then b I'm sure they have all kinds of personal life negative connotations attached to sections of the book. So it's probably traumatizing for them to rewrite it right now. That's part of the reason why they wrote yearning for her, or is it yearning for her or longing for her. Yeah, you're right. Yeah. I think it's yearning for her. Yeah. Yeah, I think you're right. And big part of the reason why they wrote that book is because it's not tied to any of the rest of the worlds. And so they just wanted to do something that was like its own thing, and they didn't have to worry about where it's gonna tie in the Lord. They didn't have to worry about, are we doing right by this character? And I think that was the smartest thing that they could have done. We wanna keep reading or we wanna keep writing, but at the same time, I got burnout dealing with this world, like I've been submerged in this world for so long that it's really impacting everything that I do. And I think that's totally okay to take a moment and be like, Hey man I can't go there right now. Yeah. I wanna do right by this. I gotta catch my breath. And so I think they, they did absolutely the best things for them, which is the most important thing. And then I think they did the second most important thing, which was they, they wanna do the best thing that they can for the book, right? So fucking take, man, take a break if you want. Yes.

EJ

The epilogue, I think is a sweet, I love, it's a nice, it's a

Stacy

nice tie up. It really is. It is. It very much is.

EJ

I don't have much to say on it besides the human spider baby thing. Sounds

Stacy

adorable. It does. Yes. And what I like is it starts with them talking to Ella because they've essentially set up a little memorial to her. They dedicated a little flowery monument to her in the Thorn skull city, so that they have a piece of her with them. So she's talking to her and she's like telling her like, I think you would've liked it here. Like it's pretty fucking cool. And they're farmers, which I think you would've appreciated. And she's and this happened, and that happened. And now Reka is chasing after Amaya. It's pretty funny. We all got him enjoying that. And so it was a nice way the thing that I like about this is that Ella died, but Ella wasn't just Cannon fodder in the book. So Ella was, they wrote her as a person with hopes and dreams. They gave her a truly horrifying death, but they also allowed their characters to carry her with them into living the rest of their lives happily, basically. Yes. And she's talking to, who is she talking to? Is it Callie? Where they basically say I feel like she's here. I feel her here when I come here to talk to her. I think it's Callie who says that. Yeah. And it's just a really sweet thing because it's the kind of thing where they address it a couple times over the course of the three books where they didn't know each other before they went into stasis. Or if they did, they knew each other in a high, maybe wave in the hallways kind of thing. They weren't like BFFs who went through all of this together. But it's a case of it, it's very much a case of found family. And what I love about this is that instead of skimming further and further apart, the humans drew closer and closer together after an initial Rocky start with Cole.

EJ

What did you think? No, go ahead With Amy. What? The epilogue?

Stacy

Yeah.

Amy

Oh, I enjoyed it. I thought it was, like Stacy said, it was a great way to really tie everything together. And honestly, it was a great memorial for Ella because she is always going to be with them no matter what. It was, she was with them for what, just a week or two if

Stacy

that, something to that effect.

EJ

Story crafty. Ryan also thought it, it was really clever, like having ivy talk to Ella.

Stacy

Yeah. Cause it was a nice, she's telling us like, Hey, this is what's been happening. Yes. It was a nice way to do wrap up narration without coming out, and it just being, and so then the people, she gets to narrate it. So there's more of an in character, almost like personal touch with it. And then the scene when she goes into labor and freaking out, running into to Will and Diego's hut and they're trying to fuck. And it's absolutely hilarious where Diego goes into nervous mode and Will is in the background, jumping into his pants, but they safely, she safely gives birth to a little half bricks, half human, who does sound like the cutest little thing. And I love how they're a mix of their son is a mix of both of. Of his people where his skin is soft like the humans. Cause the humans are often referred to as soft skins. Cause they don't have the leathery armor clad hide that the bricks do. And he's got a little human nose and little human mouth. But he has big bricks eyes and he has, I think he has four fingers instead of three. Yeah. He's all black too, except he's all, but I think he has the purple. Oh no, he has the gold in his hair. That's what it is the gold. His mother's gold in his hair, but he has huge purple eyes, just like his daddy, and so he's also the first one too that sort of broke up the color monotony where it's, Kaan has purple eyes with the purple in his hair and Rakesh has red eyes with the red in his hair and so on and so on. And so he's the first one that he's, he has black hair with blonde in it. And then he has his daddy's purple eyes. So I thought that was cool, even though I think he still has daddy's purple markings too. Yeah. But the hair is mommy. And he has a little mandibles trying to form on the side too, which was totally adorable around his little human mouth.

EJ

So I think it'll be a really interesting world to try to dive back into cuz Yeah. We're we've opened up the possibilities with the ending and with the epilogue. It is classic romance epilogue. We are wrapping things up. We have a happily ever

Stacy

after. We're living happily ever

EJ

after. And there's even a cute baby who's part of a loving family and community. With the Weaver, I will be curious of course not everything's going to be happy go lucky that you've got

Stacy

No, there's gonna have to be conflict.

EJ

Yeah. We're going have to have some conflict. We're gonna have to have some growing pains. Ptsd. T S D doesn't just go away, so No, not at all. I'm going to be really curious with the weaver. There are it ends beautifully with the spiders mate, we have room for, if things are not fully Yeah. There, there are areas we can still heal and grow. Yes.

Stacy

And there's also, and there's still some questions up to be answered too. What the fuck is Cole gonna do? Is Cole gonna hook up with a brick female? Like, how's that gonna look? Is he

EJ

just going to cover the entire village in magnificent decks? Who knows? Maybe

Stacy

and just stand on the edge of it and do like meat spin and make his dick helicopter. I don't know. No, that's why I personally think that I, or for his sake, I'm hoping that there's either an abnormally tiny Vix female, cuz let's be honest, if Cole tried to fuck a normal VIX female, it's gonna be like thrown a pencil down a hallway. And that's not a comment on either of them that it's just a comment on the fact that's just how it's gonna be tinier. Yes. I laugh every time I see like people who have the like oversized woman thing that they love, which Godspeed I don't have anything against it. But then they show like a a typically sized human, fucking like a huge woman and it's like I would put like the leg in their friend because I don't think your stubby little pencil dick is gonna do it at this juncture.

EJ

.This is why this podcast is explicit. Anyway, I'm going to end. This episode by saying good luck to Tiffany Roberts. Y'all have created some amazing stories. We are excited for the stories that you'll come up with cuz you'll come up with awesome

Stacy

stuff.

Amy

Tiffany Roberts, thank you so much for what you have written here with the Bricks and what you have already written. Because I have not read your backlog. I will eventually read quite a bit of your backlog. The Kraken series is looking damn good right now. Kraken series

Stacy

is, I love my, I love me some tentacles, right? Concurrent. Yeah. Oh, and there, not only are there tentacles, but they're special tentacles. Of course. They're tiny, little tiny ones in a special place. Oh my goodness. And I'm not gonna say that it necessarily plays out, but. The krakens can breathe in water or out of water. I'm just gonna throw that out there. Wow. Wow. You interpret that as you see fit. I will say, I do wanna take this platform to please, Stephanie Roberts. Please write another book in the claim by the alien warrior. Please. Mel is all by herself on earth. She doesn't know what the hell happened to Zoe. We could use some more Alleg Levin. I wanna see how Zoe and Rend are doing. I wanna know what their baby looks like. I concur with

Amy

Stacy. But at the same, please take care of your mental health and your

Stacy

physical health. I'm saying tomorrow my Stacy, I'm just like reiterating it. Have to be protective of the authors. I will sit and twiddle my thumbs until I get my hot little hands on it To our wonderful

EJ

readers and listeners out there, thank you so much for tuning in. We'll be back soon. We've got some releases this summer. So this is not the last you'll hear

Stacy

from us. No, not at all. And this is probably gonna be like, we're not gonna pick an author and then go through their back catalog. It's gonna be a, as catches our attention and we wanna talk about it at the time. Whether

Amy

it's standalone or series, it's gonna be

Stacy

all over the place. Yes. Goodbye everybody.
